Talavera

Talavera

1st Class Municipality

Number of Barangay: 53

The name Talavera was formally given in 1872 by
Spanish colonial authorities, who named the territory after
Talavera de la Reina, a historic town in Spain. Long before its
corporate organization, the territory was a dense, wild wilderness
originally called “Katugian” by early settlers,
which translates to a “place abounding in tugue”—a starchy,
edible wild root crop that saved early families from severe
regional droughts. Historically, it existed as a remote, rural
barrio under the administrative jurisdiction of Cabanatuan.
Following a significant rise in its local farming population, it
was permanently carved out and established as an independent
municipality by a royal decree signed on November 12, 1872.

Talavera is strategically tucked in the center-lowland basin of
Nueva Ecija, operating as a bustling commercial component of the
Cabanatuan conurbation zone. Based on the latest official
Philippine Statistics Authority census data, the municipality
records a booming population of 137,444 residents, making it one
of the most populous and densely inhabited towns in the province.
The town is highly recognized as the “Vegetable Basket of Nueva
Ecija” due to its massive, widespread production of high-yielding
agricultural crops, onions, and greens. While its highway-bound
business districts, banking networks, and retail centers have
urbanized rapidly, extensive rice cultivation, commercial
vegetable trading, palay milling, and retail logistics remain the
ultimate economic lifeblood and primary source of livelihood for
its local citizens.
