“bungamong”, which comes from “bunga”, meaning areca
nut or betel nut palm, which grew abundantly across the region during
the early days. Before the official creation of Nueva Ecija, it was
originally a territory of Pampanga. In 1760, Bongabon was formally
established as a town and parish under the spiritual patronage of
Saint Francis of Assisi. It holds a prestigious place
in local history for serving as the very first provincial capital of
Nueva Ecija.Bongabon is strategically tucked in the eastern section of Nueva
Ecija, sitting right at the base of the Sierra Madre mountains. Based
on the Philippine Statistics Authority census, the municipality
records a population of 66,839 residents. It serves as a prime
eco-tourism hub in Central Luzon, widely visited for its nature spots
like Mt. Labi and Deesap Falls. To
celebrate its cultural heritage, the town hosts the vibrant, annual
Sibuyas Festival every April, a colorful thanksgiving
celebration honoring the local farming community’s abundance.
