Santo Domingo

Santo Domingo

1st Class Municipality

Number of Barangay: 24

The name Santo Domingo was given in honor of
Saint Dominic (Santo Domingo de Guzmán), the revered founder of
the Dominican Order who also serves as the town’s patron saint.
Long before its formal corporate organization, the territory was a
fertile agricultural settlement originally known as
“Pulong Buli” due to the abundant Buli palm trees
that blanketed the area. It initially operated as a component
barrio of Talavera and later as a visita under Cabanatuan. Backed
by community petition, Santo Domingo was officially carved out and
established as an independent municipality on February 6, 1903,
under Act No. 947 passed by the Philippine Commission.

Santo Domingo is strategically tucked in the central-western
lowlands of Nueva Ecija, bordered directly by the major trading
towns of Talavera to the east and Quezon to the west. Based on the
latest Philippine Statistics Authority census figures, the
municipality records a growing population of 63,750 residents. It
serves as a prime agricultural and aquaculture hub in Central
Luzon, widely celebrated for its rolling green scenery and its
thriving, unique Philippine duck raising industry. To celebrate
its local identity and farming abundance, the town hosts the
vibrant Biyaya ng Butil Festival every April—a
colorful thanksgiving celebration honoring its core agricultural
sectors. While its trade businesses along the main highway
continuously expand, extensive rice cultivation, duck egg
production, and commercial inland farming remain the ultimate
economic lifeblood and primary source of livelihood for its local
citizens.
