San Isidro

San Isidro

2nd Class Municipality

Number of Barangay: 9

The name San Isidro was chosen by its early
settlers to honor their beloved patron saint, Saint
Isidore the Laborer (San Isidro Labrador). Long before
its formal corporate organization, the territory was a dense,
forested wilderness known as “Factoria” under
Spanish colonial rule, serving as a heavily fortified government
center for the strict administration of the Tabaco Monopoly. In
1852, San Isidro achieved an illustrious milestone when it was
officially designated as the provincial capital of Nueva Ecija, a
prestigious title it held proudly for 60 years until 1912. The
town holds an esteemed place in national history for serving
briefly as the revolutionary capital of the Philippines in 1899
when President Emilio Aguinaldo established his temporary
government headquarters here while evading American forces.

San Isidro is strategically tucked in the southernmost section of
Nueva Ecija, bordered by Gapan City to the east, San Leonardo to
the north, and San Antonio to the west. Based on the latest census
data, the municipality records a population of 55,108 residents.
It serves as a prime heritage and agricultural destination in
Central Luzon, widely visited for its preserved Spanish-era
landmarks and historic schools like the Wright
Institute (one of the oldest high schools established
outside Manila during the American period).
