Lupao

Lupao

1st Class Municipality

Number of Barangay: 24

The name Lupao was derived from the Ilocano word
“Lupa”, a wild, thorny shrub with itchy leaves
that grew abundantly across the region during the early days.
Long before its formal organization, the territory was a wild,
forested hunting ground utilized by early ethnic communities.
Historically, it was organized as a component barrio of San Jose
before gaining its separate identity. On September 28, 1913,
Lupao was officially established as an independent municipality
through an executive order issued by Governor-General Francis
Burton Harrison.

Lupao is strategically tucked in the northern section of Nueva
Ecija, sitting right at the scenic borders of Pangasinan and the
foothills of the Caraballo mountain range. Based on the Philippine
Statistics Authority census data, the municipality records a
population of 45,917 residents. It serves as a prime agricultural
town in Central Luzon, widely visited for its refreshing nature
spots like Nabao Lake and the
Santo Niño de Pasion Shrine. To celebrate its
cultural heritage, the town hosts its annual fiesta every
September, featuring vibrant street dancing that honors the local
farming community’s abundant palay harvests.

The Department of Finance upgraded its financial status following
recent national income reclassifications, moving it up from its
previous status as a third-class municipality due to booming
localized commercial hubs and a highly productive farming
economy.
