Cabiao

Cabiao

1st Class Municipality

Number of Barangay: 23

The name Cabiao was coined from the word
“Kabyawan”, a traditional stone device used by early
settlers to crush sugar cane for juices and molasses. Before its
formal transformation, the uninhabited lands were cleared by early
migrating families from Candaba and Macabebe, Pampanga. In 1797,
under Spanish colonial rule, Governor General Rafael Maria de Aguilar
officially granted Cabiao full township within the Pampanga province.
It holds a prestigious place in local history for its courageous 1896
uprising led by Mariano Nuñez Llanera, before being
permanently transferred to the province of Nueva Ecija in 1848.Cabiao is strategically tucked in the southwestern section of Nueva
Ecija, sitting right at the boundary of Pampanga and the scenic
outskirts of Mt. Arayat. Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority
census, the municipality records a population of 89,497 residents,
making it the third most populous town in the province. It serves as
a prime economic and agricultural hub in Central Luzon, widely
recognized as the “Sweet Sorghum Capital of Nueva
Ecija”. To celebrate its cultural heritage, the town honors
its vibrant agricultural sectors, showcasing massive local farmlands
dedicated to sugar cane and palay production.
