Philippine National Hero, Dr. José Rizal. Long
before its official organization, the territory was an expansion
area settled primarily by migrating Ilocano families who merged
with smaller ethnic communities. The settlement was originally
called “Bunobon” after the abundant bunobon
seedlings that thrived in its fertile soils. In 1904, it became a
regular barrio under the name Nazareth while
still part of Bongabon. Backed by provincial leaders, the
locality petitioned for corporate freedom, leading to Vice
Governor Newton signing its township decree on December 26, 1912.
The new municipality of Rizal formally opened its operations on
January 1, 1913.
Rizal is strategically tucked in the central-eastern plains of
Nueva Ecija, bordered by the towns of Pantabangan, Llanera, and
General Mamerto Natividad. According to the latest census data,
the municipality has a thriving population of 71,749 residents.
It serves as a prime eco-tourism and agricultural destination in
Central Luzon, widely visited for natural tourist spots like
Amyhan Falls, Mainit Hot Spring,
and the historic Rizal Dam (a localized
hydropower and irrigation facility along the Pampanga River).
