Pantabangan

Pantabangan

1st Class Municipality

Number of Barangay: 14

The name Pantabangan was derived from the root
Ilongot word “Sabangan” or “Sabanganan”, which
translates to a “junction of water streams.” Long before its
organization, the pristine valleys nestled at the foot of Mount
Mabilog were home to the fierce, headhunting Ilongot (Bugkalot)
and Aeta warrior societies. Historically, it was discovered on
November 30, 1645, by Father Juan Alonzo de Abarca, an Augustinian
priest. Pantabangan underwent a monumental shift in the 1970s when
the old town center—including its centuries-old historical
church—was intentionally submerged to construct the massive
Pantabangan Dam, displacing over 1,300 families
to a newly developed rolling terrain.

Pantabangan is strategically tucked in the northernmost section
of Nueva Ecija, sitting within the province’s second legislative
district between the Sierra Madre and Caraballo mountain ranges.
Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority census data, the
municipality records a population of 32,694 residents. It serves
as a premier eco-tourism and power hub in Central Luzon, widely
visited for the stunning view decks of Pantabangan
Lake (one of the largest reservoirs in Southeast Asia)
and high-end resorts like Highland Bali. To celebrate its
cultural heritage, the town coordinates vibrant festivals honoring
its resilient history, drawing local and international travelers
alike.
