Laureana “Laur” Ventura, the beloved wife of
General Manuel Tinio, a prominent revolutionary general and former
governor of Nueva Ecija. Long before its formal organization, the
land was a dense wilderness known as Barrio San
Esteban, which was a territory of Aliaga and later of
Bongabon. On January 2, 1917, Laur was officially established as
an independent municipality through an executive order issued by
Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison, separating it from
Bongabon to form its own town center.Laur is strategically tucked in the eastern section of Nueva
Ecija, sitting right at the scenic base of the Sierra Madre
mountains. Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority census,
the municipality records a population of 38,274 residents. It
serves as a prime eco-tourism hub in Central Luzon, widely visited
for its natural wonder spots like the Marcos Twin
Craters and the relaxing hot springs of Barangay Nauzon.
To celebrate its cultural heritage, the town hosts the annual
Talong Festival every January, a colorful
thanksgiving celebration honoring the local farming community’s
abundant harvests and agricultural success.
The Department of Finance elevated its status under Department
Order No. 074-2024, moving it up from its previous status as a
third-class municipality due to booming local tourism and
expanded agricultural commerce.
